Protect HongKong (the Hong Kong Society for the Protection of Public Health Ltd)  is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation, organised by and composed of Hong Kong citizens who are concerned about the safety of their environment.

Key Project Areas are identified at the start of each financial year and within each Key Project Area

The Key Project Areas for 2011-2012 are Road Safety, Protective Equipment for Street Sweepers and Provision of Automated External Defibrillators.

With the support of Southern District Councillor Mr. Fergus Fung, Hong Kong Police and Transport Department, our suggestion that improvements be made to road safety engineering in the Repulse Bay area has already been accepted.  In Kowloon we have called for urgent action to address the Golden Mile of Death and we are launching a daily review of media covering all three Key Project Areas.

We have called on Government to recognise that our street sweepers deserve proper protection under our occupational safety and health guidelines.  We will galvanise public support for these hard working people who play such a vital part in the protection of public health.

Automated External Defibrillators are not widely as available in Hong Kong as they are in other developed cities.  The survival rate for heart attack victims in Hong Kong is just 1% compared with 15% in Japan.  Despite the fact that these inexpensive devices are proven life savers they are still not available at our public housing estates nor even at our gazetted beaches. We will complete research into availability and procurement procedures by the end of April and will publish targets for increased availability by mid-May.
